The big picture is that IoT is the key to a richer integrated community life and a more sustainable planet. IoT is about connecting everything - people, devices and sensors all over the globe. IoT is what enables the full potential of what we now call Smart Grid, Connected Home, Connected Community, Smart Home, Digital Life, etc. Until IoT becomes more realized, we will live on small islands of buzz words and never-ending standardizations.

The deluge of new sensors and RFID devices opens an entirely new world of services, applications and business opportunities. Things that were science fiction just a couple of years ago are available on your cell phone today. A good example is interacting with our garbage in ways we never imagined - soda cans telling you how they want to be disposed of - waste management companies updating you about your carbon footprint based on what you threw away yesterday.

If we don’t understand how our lifestyle impacts the planet, we can’t make a change. Direct, real time information is the success factor - direct awareness made possible by getting new sensors into our everyday lives. We can be superheroes but the community has to give us the tools. We need real time environmental information – real time feedback on how our immediate behaviors are affecting fresh water, air pollution and energy consumption. When this kind of information is as common as playing Angry Birds on your smartphone, routine behaviors will begin to change towards the environmentally responsible.

State of the art is real time. Real time updates and real time interaction regardless of where you are or how you interact. It requires a strong infrastructure. We need reliable, high speed, flexible networks or else IoT will not become a reality. Our network demands will increase and QoS will reach new heights. This will change how operators handle their networks as well as how operators work together with interrelated networking.

Communities will step out from their walled-gardens to participate in the new markets – the new opportunities available to service developers and provider/operators. A universal distribution venue and reduced compatibility issues will see the open community inventing new killer apps every day. And new business models that include third party service developers will expand the scope of new services exponentially.

Clayster Cloud applications reside and function on the server; nothing is installed on the clients. The only thing downloaded is a GUI. This is in real-time and the design provides very significant advantages:

• It means that your customer can buy as many apps as they want...thousands if they like... it won’t slow down the phone or any other display device. This is in contrast to embedded applications that severely restrict performance after a very low number of applications are installed, rather sharply limiting application sales

• Upgrading a service package with new features entails updating one service file on the server in contrast to applications installed on (for example) an IPhone where every upgrade requires an explicit user action and both the application and the binary code must be re-installed on every client using them. With Clayster, any device using the new application gets the new features automatically the next time they call it (note that visibility of any feature is configurable per client).• Interoperability testing is no longer necessary for each type of client, eliminating one of the largest cost items in service development and roll-out (with STB-services for example, interoperability assurances are second only to the hardware itself as a development cost). Because nothing beyond a GUI is downloaded to a phone or STB or any display device, it is an unnecessary expense.

• Since the Clayster Apps is already tested, and applications run on the server, the client environment is secure even though new services are added (even more secure than web applications which allow for javascript in web pages – scripts that can crash the box!). Applications cannot send anything client-specific to the client. All client capabilities and hardware resources are abstracted and communication (if at all) is done only via the abstraction layers.

• Client displays: the platform supports HTML, SVG (standard browsers), a meta data client (XML based) and also a specially developed Clayster Client, an extremely thin client (C/C++) for low power devices.

Easy service development is a key requirement in the Clayster design specification because Clayster is intended to enable competitive advantages in the new application store market where a rich portfolio of services depends on how easily and reliably they can be produced. Also, a provider’s ability to respond with agility to market cues depends on how quickly they can get to market with customer-specific ideas.

You can create most services on Clayster in a matter of hours. Clayster SDK provides an open API with extensive libraries, a host of dedicated tools, and an online knowledge base with tutorials that tell you how to do it.

Options for both advanced and beginner developers are provided ranging from standard API development libraries to the GUI-driven Clayster Applications Studio, a tool enabling less technically-minded personnel to build XML- based services that are ready to place in the application store.

Ultra-granular libraries eliminate the most common programming tasks. Database programming is unnecessary since the platform uses a searchable, flexible object database. Extensive web technologies, advanced scripting, centralized event logging etc. are all supported.

Clayster .Net-based applications

Clayster SDK provides an open API with highly-granular libraries and a host of dedicated tools for common service- building tasks. All dll-based applications are developed in .Net. They are created as Class Libraries in Visual Studio by creating a new project in your solution of the type Class Library.

XML-based services

XML Services are completely defined in one or more XML files, with optional XSL transformations. They can also include online XML-content. They are more limited than .NET- based services but much easier to implement. XML- based services do not require knowledge of Clayster APIs except to know that service files developed in XML are handled by the XML Services Engine, a core Clayster component and that dll-based applications can be embedded in these service files using XML elements developed to invoke Clayster Backbone services.

This enables XML service developers to easily expand the scope of a service package by simply “dropping in” pre- integrated applications such as messaging, select-from- contact-lists, case-management, virtual keyboards etc.

Clayster Application Studio

This is an application for creating simpler XML-based services via a drag and drop type GUI. It requires very little technical knowledge and produces a complete service package ready to place in a Clayster App Store.

Clayster Cloud is a advanced cloud-application platform where every application runs in realtime on a server instead of directly embedded on the device. This design strategy provides limitless scalability i.e. the number of possible applications and devices is unlimited with regard to performance and handling.

Clayster applications are future-proof with regard to the display device. Since applications are developed independently of device and display, the developer needs no knowledge of where a user ultimately interacts with an application.

High security protects integrations with back-end systems wherever the applications platform is run on a server that is in a secure co-location.
Every client portal is separately/individually located, making it possible to locate applications with 100% local accuracy. Since each application “resides” in a validated area of the Clayster Cloud, no application can harm the device.

Clayster also supports a full range of metadata standards for dynamic applications. Clayster Cloud supports HTML 4 (HTML 5 Q4), SVG and Clayster’s own display protocol.

The Clayster display protocol provides device vendors with the Clayster Client - an extremely thin client (C/C++) for low power devices. Clayster Cloud contains an advanced service management (CMS) tool for provisioning and maintaining applications. This consists of a comprehensive range of reports and statistics on application usage and virtually everything that occurs within the platform.

This pipeline of data can is typically used to inform back-end CRM/CMS/billing-systems for invoicing and service management on an application-by-application level. Clayster Cloud also provides a virtual e-wallet for the consumer to use towards content. The e-wallet can be easily integrated with back-end invoicing systems or 3rd party invoicing services.

Clayster Client is a specially developed client written in C/C++ and JAVA that enables very low power terminals to display Clayster Cloud. In this video, you can see Clayster co-existing with other native apps in the Motorola Set-Top 1910/20 - the operator is able to run more than one middleware simultaneously. Since our applications system is a Cloud (Client/Server) solution, the operator can run thousands of applications out to the consumer without affecting the performance of the terminals and no need to change the embedded software in any way. Clayster Cloud can also be accessed through HTLM and SVG browsers.
